FAVORITES -- FROM REAL TOURISTS

  • Majas Kafenica

  • Address: Riga, 11 Rupnieciba Iela

"The best lunch I ever had. Low price! Try the karbonade (breaded beef cutlet) and mashed potatos. Then: Roll on floor with pleasure."
    --- Jon Moseley

Go near the small 'World Trade Center' on Elizabetes. Cross over Elizabetes to Rupnieciba, and walk 1 long block. Step DOWN into Majas Kafenica.

  • Saigon

  • Address: Riga, Dzirnavu 87/89
    Voice Phone: (371) 7285303

Claims to be Vietnamese, but I think the style is their OWN, like Chinese. DELICIOUS! Very low price dinner in simple cafe, not far from Hotel Latvia. Order from photos (good for tourists because of language). Drop in for desserts, including a banana split.

  • Lielais kamielis

  • Address: Vecpilsetas Str. 3, LV 1050 Riga
    Voice Phone: (371) 7212614
    Reservations: telephone (371) 7212614, fax (371) 7212614

Experience a breath of romantic 19th century Old Riga. Lielais kamielis (The Big Camel) Restaurant - Bar. Open every day from 12 (a.m.) to11(p.m.) Until the end of the 19th century, this was the wealthy trader Reitern's warehouse for imported goods. The sign "The Big Camel" meant that one could asquire imported rarities from distant lands, including spices, fruits, wines ...

"It's in a several-hundred-year-old historic building in Old Riga and serves a very unique cuisine that is part traditional Latvian and part, well, I don't know what. It's been in business for over 100 years, I think. Prices range from low to high, but generally I'd say it's a moderate- to slightly high-priced place."
